Charles Sovek

Langue : Anglais
Éditeur :
North Light Books (1996)
Format :
152 pages
ISBN : 0891347518

Mon avis :

The best practical painting book

I have purchased many oil painting books which unfortunately are long on theory but short on sound practical advice. Charles Sovek's book guides the beginner through many structured projects in which the essential building blocks of good painting technique are mastered. No book I have come across offers this instruction in such a clear concise manner. Living in a country which offers few oil painting courses, this book more than makes up for the lack of live classes. I highly recommend this book to budding oil painters

probably the best book on this subject out there,i ve learnt an approach to painting which is practical and has caused great improvement. if the exercises are followed as laid out in the book there is a lot to be gaine

Chadbourn, Alfred C.

Langue : Anglais
Éditeur :
Watson-Guptill (1987)
Format : 144 pp
ISBN : 1112716920

Mon avis :

Painting with a Fresh Eye - Chadbourn Painting with a Fresh Eye Alfred C. Chadbourn Watson-Guptill, 1987 Hardcover with dust jacket, 8-1/2" X 11", 144 pages Light wear on clipped jacket; gift inscription on endpaper; otherwise fine condition From the dust jacket: The clutter on your kitchen table, a familiar street scene, some old bottles near a window these are the kinds of ordinary sights that can become the subjects of exciting paintings. What is important is discovering new ways of looking at the world around you and interpreting what you see with a fresh eye. That is the central lesson Chad-bourn teaches in this book. He encourages you to take risks with your painting, and that is truly the only way to grow as an artist. Working with a variety of subjects, including cityscapes, beach scenes, and still lifes, Chadbourn discusses how he solves particular painting problems and suggests ways for you to develop your own creative instincts. Specific chapters focus on color and paint handling, taking liberties in interpreting nature, capturing different qualities of light, compositional challenges, and flattening the picture plane for a more coherent design. To clarify his ideas, Chadbourn includes reference photographs, compositional sketches, and swatches of his paint mixtures. He also presents a step-by-step demonstration, revealing the decision-making process he uses for every stage of the painting. Painting with a Fresh Eye is an unusual instructional book, which teaches through the sensitive, often humorous advice of an experienced artist. This delightful and informative account of one artist's approach will change your own perceptions and open your eyes to new ways of painting.

Mon avis :

From Library Journal
Inspiration may be the most important element in the psyche of an artist. These volumes represent three widely different sources of inspiration, one from the spiritual world of Zen, another from the personal guidance of an accomplished mentor, and the last from the wildest reaches of the imagination. Carbonetti had a surprise hit with her first book, The Tao of Watercolor. This one may also find a wide audience, despite its rather superficial use of Zen. It is a bold attempt, but those seriously interested in Eastern religion as artistic inspiration will be disappointed. Howard is a master of light in both watercolor and oil. Appointed Official Artist in Northern Ireland and a member of the Royal Academy, he is a stimulating teacher with strong views. Going from the sublime to the hideous, Jefferies's book on fantasy art will either stimulate the imagination or provoke nightmares. His is one of the best manuals for creating beasts, angels, demons, wizards, and cursed castles. He even gives tips on making maps for lands where your creatures can roam. Three good volumes, each sure to find an audience.

  • The Big Book of Painting Nature in Oil

Allyn Schaeffer.

Langue : Anglais
Éditeur :
Watson-Guptill <> (1991)
Format :399 pages
ISBN : 0823005038

Mon avis :

Helpful book especially for "home schooled" painters,

I didn't know what to expect when I purchased "The Big Book of Painting Nature in Oil". But, after my initial misgivings, I have found it enormously useful as a reference for composition, color selection and methods to paint difficult subject matter (for a beginning artist with no formal art education) such as forests, fog, grass. When I paint outside, I take it with me. It has helped me be more selective in setting up my painting and helped me to simplify. Wonderful book! I'm glad I bought it.

A wonderful guide to oil painting technique

The Big Book of Painting Nature in Oil should be a standard reference in every oil painting library. From the most basic landscape of a lone tree to the intricate details of autumn color, the reader-painter is taken on a journey of discovery.
Beginners to seasoned landscape artists will appreciate the attention given to the palette, color mixing, supports, materials, and techniques. Each painting lesson features a reference photograph and step-by-step instructions that, with time and practice, help the reader become a better artist.

Not for the realistic painter

I returned this book after flipping through the pages in less than a half-hour. The paintings are more expressive and impressionist than realistic--which is great if that's what your goal is to paint. For me, I want realistic paintings down to the smallest detail. The book has demos for painting specific details like fog, snow covered rocks, reflections in rivers and streams and so on, but they aren't realistic. Like I said earlier, they're more expressive. Not my style

  • Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Oil Painting

Langue : Anglais
Éditeur :
Watson-Guptill (1991)
Format : 256 pages
ISBN : 0823005038

Mon avis :

Not for advanced painters,

This book is not for anyone at an advanced level- whilst there is a whole lot of information, each technique is described in one page, with very little depth. Some of the examples chosen to highlight a particular technique are odd indeed - why for example, if one was showing how to paint "dappled sunlight", would the subject matter be a building? I may be odd myself (who knows), but the term 'dappled sunlight' brings a rural/country scene to mind....

Informative and fun

I am a serious painter and I refer to this book often. It is a collection of advice and demos from many contemporary artists. Landscape, portrait, and still life are all represented.

The artists' works are quite varied, so the result is interesting and fresh. I enjoy this book and think other artists will too.
